Simple permissions question
Alan Might there be two locations, one near the libraries and one somewhere on your home directory? I had this same weirdness with pidgin. I changed some settings in the I set root, group and others permissions to read-only and that kept it from changing. Perhaps your circumstance has something similar.

Users cannot set permissions for others?
You cannot change permissions of stuff that is not yours, etc. *Sigh*. It's non-trivial, to say the least, to chroot users so that *only* /tmp and /var are made hits of running it from a remote fileserver, you'd have to either NFS read-only mount or hard-link /usr into *every chroot user's home directory*.

permissions on vfat drives
Hi, I would like to give files on my computer total write permissions but the problem is that when I try to change the permissions in the file properties it will allow me to set the Read-Only box to empty and apply these settings but when I close the properties and then re-open them there is a square in the box.

Another way of saying it - which directories *should* I leave (must even?) as part of the root filesystem? I want to mount this as read-only so that nothing writes to the root (Same goes for changing permissions promiscuously, btw. Trust until you're sure you know better.) FP should not change the permissions to read only. Check to make sure that some directory higher up isn't marked as read only. FP essentially just asks IIS and the NTFS subsystem to make the changes. The analogy would be not being able to delete a file even though you had write permission for the directory in which it resides. We can't change the UNIX file system semantics but we can preserve the meaning of READ-ONLY *using* UNIX file system semantics. First we strip write permission from the file.
